Guild News · Meeting Night

June, Bias binding how to, & LOTS of rain!

Hello all!

I am hopping that everyone made it home safe and sound Monday night, I was the last to leave and my Aunt & I drove directly into the storm on the way home. Lightning, thunder and a torrential downpour,! So not fun!

Into the storm

and then we hit the rain!

However before the weather alerts started going off (and everyone started rushing to their cars!) we had our monthly guild meeting and a great program on Bias Binding!

It was also another great night filled with donation quilts! 50 finished Quilts for S.C.I.C. of Project Linus, 3 finished Quilts for local Nursing Homes, 4 Preemie Blankets, & 2 Cancer caps for the cancer center. A total of 59 total donated items, thanks all for your great charity work! (i will updated the totals on our Charity & Donation page as soon as i get last months info from Karie!)

Raffle Tickets are now available and ready to sell to the public. Please talk with Pat S. if you would like some tickets to sell to your friends! We were not able to sell tickets at this years Artisan Fair so if you know of any places we might be able to sell tickets please let us know.

Rita N. talked a bit on this years Quilt Show Bed Turning. With the help of one of our quilt show vendors “Stitch & Sew Fabrics” in Arthur Il. we will be turning Amish & Mennonite quilts.

Don’t forget to get started on this years Guild Challenge Project! We have been challenged to make the Zippy pattern (from ModaBakeShop.com & designed by Tammie S. from CraftyTammie.com) You can use whatever fabrics and colors you would like to use but you must set the quilt together in the exact way the pattern shows. Do not add any extra blocks, sashings, borders, and so on. Whats the challenge in that you ask? Well its to show everyone what using different fabrics can do to change the look of a quilt, that’s why we don’t want you to add any extras! Your challenge quilts need to be completed and brought to the AUGUST 17th Guild meeting for judging. Marilyn S. is looking into asking a local quilt shop to judge the quilts (1st, 2nd, & 3rd place ribbons) We will also be voting on a Crossroads Quilters Guild Best Pick. Guild members that attend the meeting will get to pick their favorite, the quilt with the most votes will be the winner of the Best Pick Ribbon. And who knows, maybe you will also win a little extra prize to go with your ribbon! We will then hang the quilts (with your winning ribbons!) in the Entry Way at this years Crossroads Harvest of Quilts Show. So let all get to work to make a Zippy Quilt!

Barb G. has agreed to take over handling the guild membership booklet, thanks bunches Barb! If you need a correction or addition to your guild book information please contact Barb!

Rita N. will be holding onto our printed name tags, Thanks Rita! If you need a printed fabric name tag please let Rita know!

This months door prize winner was Judy T. Congrats Judy!

Sandy F. gave the monthly program on making continuous Bias Binding. Sandy suggested using the Robert Kaufman Quilters App ( ios, google play, and the kindle store) to find the fabric requirements needed to make enough binding for your quilt. The RK App is a great addition to all your smart phones & tablets! here is the handout that Sandy provided us:

Sandy's Bias Binding Tutorial

If you are having problems and cant get in touch with Sandy to see her magic binding you might find this video from Missouri Star Quilt Co that might help you figure it all out if you get in a bind. (i wasn’t able to find a video that showed the exact way that Sandy does her binding sorry!)

Well that’s all for now, be sure to check back in next week to see a couple of videos on trimming half square triangles. You just might need a little trimming & squaring help to complete this years Guild Challenge quilt!
